Mellcrest had built their business on Magento, but the platform was becoming more burden than benefit. Rising costs. Heavy admin. Limited features. They needed something more stable, easier to manage, and ready to grow with them.
That's where we came in. Migrating them from Magento to Shopify, cleaning up years of legacy data, and building a custom Patchworks integration to keep Shopify and their Intact IQ ERP perfectly in sync.
This is the story of how Mellcrest moved platforms without skipping a beat.
The brief
Mellcrest came to us with a clear set of priorities:
- Move to Shopify for more stability and lower running costs
- Make admin easier to manage day-to-day
- Build a Patchworks integration with their Intact IQ ERP
- Unlock more features without the Magento overhead
The goal wasn't just a platform swap. It was a chance to tidy up the data, simplify operations, and put the business on a faster, leaner foundation.
The challenge
Two things stood out from the start:
- Years of Magento data needed cleaning before it could be migrated
- The Patchworks integration with Intact IQ had to be built properly to keep ERP and storefront aligned
Get either of those wrong and the business would feel it on day one. Orders out of sync. Pricing inconsistent. Customer records duplicated. We knew the planning needed to be tight.
What we did
We took on the full migration end to end:
FAQs
What is Patchworks and why use it?
Patchworks is an integration platform (iPaaS) that connects ecommerce, ERP, warehouse, and other business systems. For Mellcrest, it acts as the middleware that keeps Shopify and Intact IQ in sync automatically, removing the need for manual data entry between the two systems.
What data is synced between Shopify and Intact IQ?
Three main flows: customer records (with the Intact IQ Customer ID written back to Shopify), Shopify orders submitted into Intact IQ as structured Sales Orders, and price lists updated from Intact IQ into Shopify Price Catalogues on a regular schedule.
Can you migrate years of Magento data without losing anything important?
Yes. We treat data migration as an opportunity to clean as well as transfer. Old, duplicate, or redundant records get tidied up so the new Shopify store starts on a strong foundation. Products, customers, orders, and other essentials are mapped and migrated with intent.
What other integrations were set up?
Alongside Patchworks and Intact IQ, the new store was configured with Klaviyo for email marketing, advanced shipping rates, back-in-stock notifications, and minimum/maximum buy controls. The whole stack was designed to make the business easier to run day to day.
Will the new platform save Mellcrest money long-term?
That was one of the main drivers. Shopify's lower platform costs combined with simpler admin and fewer custom workarounds mean ongoing running costs drop significantly compared to the previous Magento setup.
Could you build a similar integration for our business?
Yes. We work with Patchworks regularly and have experience building integrations between Shopify and ERPs like Intact IQ, NetSuite, and others. If you need your storefront and back-office systems to talk to each other reliably, we can help design and build the right sync for your setup.
